I just got done talking to my new farrier ...who tells me there is a new
spot-on fly treatment for horses (like Advantage flea control for
dogs/cats). Since I just met this guy, I'm not sure how accurate his stories
are - but if this one is true, it could be very helpful. Of course, he
doesn't know the brand name, or which company makes or distributes it.

It sounds too good to be true, IMO....anyone know anything about this?

RIDECAMPERS: The Arabs have been coming to the Tevis for many years. Riders
from Jordan, UAE , Saudi Arabia,& Qatar. They know what the Tevis is all
about. I remember one Tevis I rode several years ago when I passed two Arabs
on the long climb to Devils Thumb. I was riding my horse but they were both
off their horses leading them up the mountain. They were dressed in their
native clothing with the traditional head-dress. I saw them at the first and
second Vet Checks also. I don"t think they finished that year. The Tevis has
always been an International Ride. They always have some Foreign Riders. The
Tevis will never be a joint FEI/Tevis Ride! They don't need the FEI to muddy
up the waters so to speak. After reading some of the excerpts from the FEI
Rule book that Bob Morris sent us in his post. About making the ride easier
if necessary. Changing the Trail to make it easier! I think the U.S.
Forrest Service would frown upon the Tevis if they leveled Cougar Rock for
instance. The Tevis will be All/American always. Hope Lundquist

It's called Freedom Spot-On. This is what they say about it in Equus:
A fly repellent applied in six drops...Manufacturers suggest applying one
drop to the horse's forehead, croup and at each knee and hock to repel flies
for 14 days."Once the product is applied it takes about 18 to 24 hours to
travel from the tip of the tail to the top of the head," says Larry James,
co-owner and founder of Star Horse Products. "It has a 70 to 75 percent
repel rate, and if a fly makes contact with the horse, the fly will die."
Price: Suggested retail, $24.95 for one- month pack, $50 for three-month
pack.

(sounds kind of scarey to me !)

My feed store only sells beet pulp with molasses. Should I look elsewhere for
just plain beet pulp, or is it only sold with molasses?
Thanks for the information.

The website for Freedom Spot-On does not mention ticks.

Asked my vet, when he was out for spring shots recently, about a new product
I'd heard of that protects against both flies and ticks, and he said that it
just came out late last summer so they don't really know much about it yet.

You may have seen this, if you read Equus, but I thought this was
interesting. An article states that you can speed shedding by "emptying an
entire bottle of baby oil over your horse, making sure to cover his legs and
belly. After leaving the horse oiled for an overnight soak, give him a
warm-water shampoo. The oil encourages dead hair to slide from the
follicles. The procedure itself makes one big mess but gets it all over
with in a hurry. The oil treatment works so well, in fact, that some
recipients can look rather bald for a few weeks afterward."
