RE: LOWERING HEAD

Jim, this could be caused by saddle fit problems even though your horse is
showing no signs of flinching when you palpate his back. My tough little
mare never reacts to probing her back and always gets all A's at the rides
but she is horrible to fit a saddle to because she has a dip in her back.
Saddles off the rack bridge on her and she will lower her head quite a lot
to raise her back up to the middle of the saddle and relieve the pressure
points at the front and back of the saddle. This is one example of why a
horse will lower it's head. I imagine that lowering his head and stretching
his muscle and raising the center of his back is possibly to relieve some
kind of discomfort. Most things that horses do are oriented around their
physical feelings.
