Hi Jim....not enough info!  What, why, how...etc.  The only time I 
experienced something like that was at the end of a very, very 
looooooooong trail ride and my horse was salt deprived and she was 
licking the ground trying to get salt from the dirt road. When we 
stopped, I had a salt block put in the paddock (with other horses) 
and she controlled that block for hours, gnawing her way into it. 
This was pre-electrolyte days....!
