Re: RC: breeder ethics

Thank you, Sue
Since it was brought up, I'd like to throw in my 2 cents worth (and
maybe you'll think I'm overcharging) but do you honestly think that
during the Polish horses' 1000 mile trek, there was no hanky-panky of
those stallions with the local desert "riff raff" (I mean that they were
not registered in any stud book) during those long nights? And I think
if you look into any breeding program---and I mean ANY---way back in the
days without blood tests or DNA or well kept written records, there were
bound to be some outcrosses. It was pretty widely thought by most
trainers of the time (according to Jeff Wonnell) that Serafix was an
Anglo Arab. Jeff believes some of the opposition to the DNA testing
proposals come from breeders who are scared sh--less that their whole
breeding program may be in jeopardy if DNA standards are adopted. The
last few generations SHOULD be fairly pure due to blood tests; it is
only the French program that I'm aware of that has been questioned of
late and hence the big WAHO hullabaloo.
So I wouldn't go pointing too many fingers because if there is
dishonesty (and let's face it, there always is going to be that) it for
the most part was way back in most pedigrees and certainly not an issue
with US bred today.
You know I've just gotten a post from a dressage rider who said she was
interested in endurance but after reading recent posts slamming tall
Arabians her comment was that she thought dressage people COULD be mean
and now to find it again in endurance, she is thinking of just trotting
close to her barn. It sounds bad to slam others' programs and I don't
believe there is a need for it. There is room for all types. What is one
program's cull, is another man's dream horse. Isn't that where many good
endurance horses originally came from---the "culls" of the halter and
English Pleasure breeding programs? And look how well many of them did
in endurance. If anyone is going to slam a type of horse or breeding
program, would you please just type "SLAM" in the title so I can delete
these from now on?
Thank you

I've learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer it
gets to the end, the faster it goes. Smell the roses!
