electric fencing

Amanda Perez AmandaPerez@ureach.com
I'll bet the Pasos that get out of their electrobraid
fence are in an improperly grounded fence.

Good grounding is key for sucessful electric fencing.
Try use an 8 ft grounding rod when possible, and get as much
of that under ground as possible. Buy a fence tester to make sure
you have 'zap'. In dry weather, dump a bucket of water on
your grounding rod as often as you can - that really helps.
Unless using a 'brush cutter' charger, inspect and trim ALL
vegetation touching the fence (even grass) as often as possible-
it causes current drain that really can diminish the effectiveness
of the fence.

Personally, I won't use an electic string/tape fence for other than
short-term (attended) turn-out - they are just to easy to
run through. A good friend had her herd run through a
'New Zealand' type fence and onto a highway. Her beautiful
welsh pony mare that taught all her children to ride was
struck and horribly injured - had to get a neighbor to shoot
her. Just too tragic.
