The problem with a microchip is not many law
enforcement agencies or sale barns have a reader. Also
a smart thief can remove the chip. A brand is
permanant, easily identified from a distance and can
be registered with the International Livestock ID
association (302-294-0895) and various state cattle
assoc. At a sale, branded horses have a better chance
of being reconized by a brand inspector at the sale.
Only Texas, however requires that brands be checked by
state law.
