It would be interesting to have more info.  For example, how long and hard was the horse worked to reach 100 bpm.  IMHO, 100 bpm isn't all that high, so dropping to 40 bpm doesn't seem impossible.  Which leads me to ask, are any of you doing interval training?  If so, what heartrates are you working your horse to and how fast does the HR drop to whatever number?
