Geez Bob, you make it sound as if there is something bad about finishing in 
the rear.

There is nothing wrong with finishing LAST!!!  Some people in fact, 
purposely try to finish in the back.  It doesn't mean that you finished 
there simply because that is all you or your horse were capable of.
