Re: Re. Sac. sale, "bred for endurance"?

breeding"?

I have had a discussion with a friend of mine who breeds/races TBs. We
compared the genetic vs training influences on the quarter mile race horse
vs the 100 mile endurance horses. His contention was that the quarter mile
was so fast and short that the win was *almost* entirely genetic, where in a
100 miles there is plenty of room for such things as strategy and luck (not
to mention training/conditioning) but that solid genetics gives you a good
base to build on.

I think it is exciting that endurance is growing to a point where we are
starting to see some successful bloodlines, sire lines and/or family groups
emerge.

My original question (I think <G>) was... If you are shopping for a baby,
how important is an endurance record on the individual sires and dams?... do
siblings and cousins prove just as much?, or grandparents?

my question comes up because the mare I am riding this year, and next, is a
very high percent related to many successful endurance horses, but at the
grandparent level, and back, so we are working on getting some personal
miles for her before she is bred again. The others either already have
personal miles or closer relations <G> (that second category is still a
little worried they might have to do some *real* work in the next few
years!)
