RE: crops

The only reason I can see would be exactly that....hormones. When we have
75% stallions at our rides you might think that one could possibly need one
for self defense. But to be honest, in over 10 years of riding even mares in
heat with stallions around, I've only had one time when I could have used
one, and I didn't have one on me. But that was a stallion some dim-witted
groom let loose in the arena while I was working Dorika. I got off of her as
soon as possible and SCREAMED at the stallion who was so stunned he just
stood there and was seized by some people. Dory, of course, was hiding
behind me. I have witnessed exactly one incident of a stallion going after
another during a ride and that is out of literally hundreds of rides, most
of which involved someone on a stallion. As far as I can see the only time
they'd be useful would be at a vet check...and I know that's not where they
are used.

would someone please explain to me why a person would ride an endurance ride
with a crop???I've heard their explanation that they need to get the horses
attention ---especially at the beginning of the ride---which sounds kind of
strange but...OK...whatever...but why would ANYONE need a crop the last 50
miles of a ride???Surely you've managed to get your horses' attention by
then???(stallion owners need not reply);o]
