You are so right, Kathy
2 local vets told me not to grain my pregnant mares unless absolutely
necessary. He said that the quality of alfalfa in CA was sufficient to
provide all that they needed. I was to pour on the mare and foal
directly after foaling, however. That is when he felt the mare needs the
extra--- and it poses no danger of too large a foal for her body, a
"windswept" condition caused by same, nor epiphysitis at birth which I
have seen in foals of mares who were heavily grained just prior to
birth. Even with the mare and foal supplement one has to be careful of
the latter. Of course, Susan or Sarah would be the best ones to comment
on that.
