Garmin 12 is fine. Saw a local ad yesterday: $140. Yes the software can be
purchased later. The 12 will not have built-in maps nor provision for
external antennae. With appropriate software you can upload tracks, routes,
and waypoints.

I really don't need topography stuff.  My part of Texas is flat, the
roadside ditches are the only changes in elevation.
