Re: RideCamp: Reconditioning rider

The thing that's helped my riding - and figure - the most is going to
the gym and using various leg machines. I press 150+ pounds on the
incline leg press, 140+ pounds on both the adductor (squeeze legs
together machine) and internal glute (spread legs apart machine). I use
other leg machines too.

Two to three hours a week focusing on lower body, including abs and
back, have improved my riding at least 300% - and that isn't an
exaggeration. I usually do 15-20 repetitions ("reps") 3 to 5 times
("sets"). Any good gym can advise you on getting started!

I can now do endurance conditioning rides bareback on a spooking horse,
16 months ago I couldn't stay on a horse bareback for 200 feet. At the
time I was riding 15+ hours a week in good weather, and thought I was in
good shape strength wise.

Upper body strength is important also.

Good luck!
