biting the bullet

OK, what if I did have to put a horse down on the trail.   How would I do
it?  I often carry a pistol, but where exactly do you shoot them?  In the
forehead?  In the ear?  I'm not trying to be gruesome, I'm serious about
this.  I'd only want to pull that trigger once...
