I am especially interested in finding a good width. >Thanks, >Carol The standard dressage arena's dimensions: 20 meters x 40 meters (about 66 feet x 132 feet) is a good size for most purposes. I wouldn't feel comfortable asking most horses to canter in a width any smaller than that. I once taught riding in an area 20m. x20m., which was just adequate (the problem being the annoyance of not being able to use straight lines very easily - having to go across the arena to move straight). The bigger sized arena you can build the better, of course: more possibilities for movement without hitting a wall! My best advice is to start with figuring on the 66ft. x 132ft. size as a starting point. Then if you have the space and means to provide good footing and drainage on larger scale, go for that.
