I can only compare to veterinary conventions.  While the "public" at large is 
not admitted, many spouses, technicians, etc. who do not pay to go to the 
lecture sessions DO attend.  They are "registered" at no cost, and can (and 
DO) attend the trade shows.  In the past 20 years, I've attended such 
conventions all across the country and have yet to see one charge for the 
"privilege" of attending just the trade show.
