Another thing that I have found helpful is to ride alone at a ride.  Don't
start out with your wife if she's not going to accommodate you (dang the
competitive streak!).  Your horse will be a tad upset at the start, but you
can usually buddy up with someone who is going more your pace.  All of the
other training advice so far sounds right on too.  Good luck!
