Hello,
My guess from information I have gleaned at endurance ride seminars is that 
the owner of the feed store sold the name brand because it was stabilized and 
did not sell the generic because it was not. The problem with the generic and 
not being stabilized is that it can spoil and frequently does before being 
used up/fed to the horses.  I guess feeding spoiled feed could cause colic in 
a horse. I am not a vet or an equine nutritionist so consider that in my 
reply. As I mentioned, my info. comes from seminars I have attended. I am a 
longtime horse owner/lover/rider.
