I tried to stay out of this, but I've been lured in. My experience is that
it's best to be with ANY horse when he is being shod or attended to by a
vet. Years ago, Sun, who has never had problems being tied, was shod while
I was at work. The shoer was good, but that day had the flu. While Sun
doesn't usually pull back, he also has never agreed to treatment he
considers unfair or unwarranted. As near as I can piece the story together,
Suni moved while the shoer was holding his front foot. The nails were in
but not bent over yet. The shoer yanked his foot. Suni yanked back.
Upshot: Suni had a gash on his other front leg that required stitches. The
shoer was man enough to tell me about it, which I certainly appreciated, but
instead of just a shoer bill, I now had an emergency vet call too. Lesson
learned. Even with quiet horses, the owner can help with tactful
negotiation when everyone is in a bad mood.
