Maggie,
I've only ridden in So. Cal. but I've never seen any wriggly things in the
water, never seen any sign of life at all.  Of course, I've never seen a
puddle on the trail either.  You do get them sometimes, but usually that's
after a rain that has washed out chunks of the trail.  Since I've moved to
N. Ca., I've seen thousands of insects I never knew existed.  Try a ride in
S. Ca.
