Anyone have any suggestions on how to relieve "summer itch" in horses? The insects have been particularly voracious this year, causing 2 awful cases of summer itch with my horses. Both horses have rubbed open sores in their manes and tails (bald spots, too). The cause is either a severe reaction to insect bites and/or migrating gnat larvae (oncacerca--not sure of the spelling of that one!). One neighbor had good results using Dexamethasone (again, probably wrong spelling), but I'm not sure I want to use this on my horses. Oral doses for 2 months. Worming with Ivermectin did not result in any relief. Thanks!! Laura, N. Fla.
