I had extra rings mounted up high for the reason of having hay in front of my
horse even on a short trip (1 mile).  It keeps most horses focused and busy.
The key is to have the hay tied high if you don't have a manger and make sure
that if the hay is all eaten, the hay bag does not hang below the horse's
face.
