Re: saddlebred endurance

I have a Saddlebred gelding with whom I did 100 Limited Distance miles and
then completed two 50 mile rides. He did wonderfully, though, at 16'3 and
with an unusually heavy coat which begins in early August and the majority
of which stays till June, he did have some cooling problems. Some creative
and frequent body clipping did help somewhat with this problem, but, during
one particularly hot ride last September in Tennessee, he acquired a mild
case of road founder, caused, I believe, by a combination of his size, the
heat, the terrain and the fact that I probably should have had pads on his
front feet.

I now have a purebred Arabian gelding with whom I have been competing this
year. I thought I would use them both, but have not had the time to
condition both! I will tell you, however, that my Saddlebred is an
excellent trail horse, with gaits FAR superior to ANY Arabian I have ever
ridden. He covers more ground than any Arabian I have seen, including my
own (whose pretty awesome himself)! I love that horse and given the time I
would not hesitate to compete both in endurance again. Yes, I truly believe
there is a place for the Saddlebred in endurance! Go for it!

I have just aquired a saddlebred & am wondering if they have been
successful in endurance. I would appreciate emails on the subject
