sore backs from trailering

To the ridecamper whose mare had a sore back after the trailer ride:
In addition to what others have said, 2 things--1) is your trailer
absolutely level? Are you SURE? 2)I have a straight haul with a manger in
front. Both of my horses are small (14.2ish). When I go for short trips I
put a flake of hay in the manger; no prob. On longer trips, I have been
known to put 4-5 flakes in the manger, both so that they have plenty to
eat, and because it's an easy way to haul more hay. They have to life
their heads WAY up to eat/see out. So what happens when they stand for a
long time with their heads unnaturally high? You guessed it!
Terre (still learning after all these years, mostly because I'm still
making stupid mistakes after all these years!)
