To give you some history of this:  the two main reasons we changed
from the total-points system were

1) It didn't provide  head-to-head competition.

2) Very few people could afford to compete in the more than 1,000
miles of rides a year necessary to have a shot at a Championship.  One
year I raced 1,900 miles (and finished first many times and Top Five
nearly every time), and still only made Reserve Champion.  This was
before there were so many multidays, it could easily take even more
miles today.

We've been trying to find a formula ever since that will provide the
proper mix of acessibility to our members, proving the endurance and
durability of horse and rider (and horsemanship of the rider), and
providing head-to-head competition.  It hasn't been easy!
