I've always tied a string to the old leather/fender as I pulled it out.
I then used the string left in the stirrup slot to pull the new leathers
thru.  It can be hard to get the new ones thru on a stiff, tight saddle.
The biothane leathers w/ the camlock bothered by legs REALLY badly until
I got a full saddle merino wool sheep skin cover.  They can also be hard
to get perfectly even, but they have infinite variability.  It's a trade
off.
