Ringbone

My friend had her horse x-rayed today and was told
by her vet that her 8 yr old gelding has ringbone.
This is the first year for endurance for this horse.  He 
was rode very seldom previous to now.  The vet told her
that he should not be used for endurance anymore.  Was
wondering if anyone has experience with ringbone, causes,
rest time,  etc etc.
