"let" them?  I guess these are horses that gallop 100 miles whenever
given the chance.

There are riders whose horses look good, even when doing sub 10 hour
100's...and then there are those who have built a reputation on their
skill at managing to wring a horse out.  Obviously those of us who like
to talk about "A"s are a little picky about whose wins we're impressed
by.

So how do you know where to stop?  If you don't know what the limit
is...how do you know how far you can push and them still recover?  You're
right, they're not toys, they're our friends and partners.  I'm proud of
the fact that I've never had to have a horse treated.  It's bound to
happen sooner or later if I stay in this sport, but if I can top 10 and
accumulate some points and still maintain "all A's" that's MY goal.
