washing pads
Since this subject has come up in a couple of posts, I wanted to pass on
a tip that I read somewhere a few years ago ("Equus", maybe?). If you
don't want to use soap to clean machine-washable tack, use horse
shampoo.  That way if there is an unintentional bit of residue, it will
be something gentler to the horse's skin than a harsh detergent.  Akela
never had any problems but I started doing that to be safe and it works
well.  I use it on pads, bridle, breastplate and girth (still don't care
for biothane; it's nylon and fleece for me).
