RE: Swimming anyone?

Title: RE: Swimming anyone?

My husband's horse is a TB/QH cross, heavy muscles & coal black.  Between his color and his muscle mass, he really tends to overheat.  If we hit water, Mike is sluicing and scraping this fella big time!  When we started him 12 years ago, Major was thrilled to find that standing in a mountain stream "cooled his tootsies".  As time went by, he sought the DEEP places to stand.

Lately, he's taken to pawing with his front feet to splash water up under his chest and belly.  Mike is still sponging like crazy and corrects him until everyone has had a chance to drink, but this is one of those decisions that Major made & he's not backing down.  After getting soaked behind the two of them, I've learned to just position Rocket for the full effect.  It really cuts down on MY sponging!

I've yet to let a horse lay down in the water with me (I've seen it happen though).  I did have a VERY mellow QH at a parade drill team practice, though.  The discussion about how to proceed went on for nearly an hour w/ no activity.  The mare yawned and folded up on the ground.  I was in such shock, that I simply stepped off and gave her a good thump to get back up.  Talk about embarrassing!  (The speaker <was> boring - Yellow was the only critter there to admit it out loud, so to speak.)

  Now it's time
to get good with that sponge so the horse won't have to take matters into
his own hands.  :-)
