Re: Long Shanked mechanical hackamores

Barb,

The English Hackamore did not seem too severe, compared
to others. I don't think he needs a lot more control, but I need
to be able to get his attention without stopping and circling or
going back down the trail in the opposite direction. Where we've
been ableto stay with another horse of compatible gaits he's
been pretty good. It's trying to ride alone and having other horses
pass us or overtaking someone we can see from a long way
off. Then he wants to RACE!

What would you suggest as a step up from a full-cheek snaffle?

I'm taking him to Robin Groves for driving training on Wednesday,
and have asked her to try some alternatives.

I'd like to have some alternative before the GMHA 25-mile CTR
on June 13th.

John

John:
Makes no mistake... a long shanked mechanical hacamore
can be very severe, regardless of the manufacturer.

The shanks act like a lever, cranking the noseband down like
a vice, the longer the shank the more leverage.

Slip one around your calf, or your thigh, and have someone
pull on it, and you can get a good idea how much pressure they
exert.

Bob is very correct in that your horse should be trained to
stop when you ask. Most riders use bit-less head gear because
it's easier for some horses to eat, drink and breath without a bit.

It's not to put a "whoa" on them.

Barb
