Makes no mistake... a long shanked mechanical hacamore
can be very severe, regardless of the manufacturer.

The shanks act like a lever, cranking the noseband down like
a vice, the longer the shank the more leverage.

Slip one around your calf, or your thigh, and have someone
pull on it, and you can get a good idea how much pressure they
exert.

Bob is very correct in that your horse should be trained to
stop when you ask. Most riders use bit-less head gear because
it's easier for some horses to eat, drink and breath without a bit.

It's not to put a "whoa" on them.
