Re: Re: Long Shanked mechanical hackamores

My stallion can be a heck of a handful at the beginning of a ride, and I
often start a ride on foot for my own safety. I use only a hollow mouth
eggbutt snaffle on a sidepull. After the first 30 mile loop at our last
ride, I took out the bit and had him in just the sidepull! He is only 8
years old and has done less than half a dozen rides! BUT, I am anal about
training a horse to STOP!!! Regardless of whether a horse has a bit in
his/her mouth, or leverage on their faces, they should stop for you when you
tell them too! Vic may be a ball of adrenaline at the beginning of a ride,
but it is channeled into exploding in place! He would NEVER move forward
without permission. :-) The point here is that if a stallion can be trained
to stop by voice command while being ridden by a featherweight, then darned
near any horse can be trained to stop, IMHO.
