purpura

Nancy,

you wrote:

Please tell me someone, how many times have you heard about a horse
getting
Pupura Hemmoraghica (spelling?) from a strangles vaccine?
Mine did and almost died. He got it from the IM shot, not the nasal.
Fortunately I live not far from U.C. Davis where he spent two weeks on
steroids and stuff to stop the immune reaction.
I will NEVER NEVER give a strangles shot again. Still paying off $2000 to
the vet clinic (they deserve it) to save my horse.
Before that, my 18 year old Arabian Gelding never had a sick day in his
life!

Sounds like what happened to my horse a year and a half ago, only I
didn't give strangles vaccine. It was the adjuvant in the vaccines I did
give, and the vaccine brand was Fort Dodge. I would check with your vet
to find out what brand strangles vaccine you gave. Please let me know -
I'd be interested. I also spent $2000. getting him back to health with
extensive use of steroids, etc. and he also spent a week at the hospital
(UPenn.) He also had never been ill in his life, and he was 20 at the
time. So I do not vaccinate him now - it's not worth the risk. By the
way, I had his rabies titer taken this year just to see if he still had
immunity, and it was *unbelievably* high!

PS - I was nearly ready to unsubscribe from the list - so many
mean-spirited posts insulting people - but your post made me realize that
there are still very important issues being discussed. Thanks!
