From a hay grower that does the best we can......good oat hay is cut early,
just when the seed heads are barely beginning to form. The oats are very dark
green at this point and typical farmers are scared to cut then. But, if they
will cut at this stage, the hay will be leafy and tasty! BTW, oat hay changes
color very quickly, do not let this bother you. Light and/or Air will may the
outside of the bale turn golden, the inside will still be light green. Oat
hay smells good enough to eat it yourself, and if you try it, you will find it
is very sweet. My experience with alfalfa hay is this: I've never seen a
good bale cut from NC! Just my experience, no offense intended! I buy the
alfalfa cubes, less waste than the stemmy, molded stuff I can find around
here.

Hi Leigh,
Yes--I agree.(That's what I have been trying to say now for several
letters.) The ratio of oat and alfalfa is excellent--you just have to
know what to feed and what "good oat and not-too-rich alfalfa ' LOOKS
like. The horses love both and do VERY well on it in our area. Thanks
for your input--I felt alone out there!
