RE: pain relief (Re: ridecamp-d Digest V99 #25)
Sorry if you got this twice. My e-mail program said it wasn't sent (even
though I thought I did)

Heidi,
Thanks for the reply. I was referring to instances outside of competition
(ie. for example my sister -in-laws horse seriously tore a muscle in her
shoulder after something spooked her and she went through the fence and
fell down a hill . She was on Bute for an extended period as prescribed by
our vet (she was also confined to her stall).
I agree that you shouldn't need to use Bute if your horse has been
conditioned properly. I was asking about instances where it was prescribed
by a veterinarian for an injury, etc. I just wanted to know if there were
any proven alternatives to Bute.
Thanks again for the info!
Maria

If one MUST use a drug, the two that I think are the best are bute and
Banamine. I prefer bute for biomechanical problems and Banamine for
problems
like tie-ups and colics. But qualify that with everything I have said in
my
previous posts--I would not give ANY drug routinely after a ride--only for
a
problem! And if there is a problem, there should be an appropriate layoff,
regardless of the withdrawal time of the drug!
