Re: Heart Rate

Bob,

In the canter the stride pretty much forces the horse to breath deep.
In the trot this isn't true. So the higher heart rate may result. An
interesting thing happened with Misty. After a lot of LSD she started
wanting to canter more - so I let her. I noticed the heart rate
inversion we are talking about - lower when she transitioned into a
canter. As we cantered more and more, her hart rate droped at the trot.
While a lot of this was conditioning I believe that some was from the
fact that the canter required her to breath more efficiently - use more
of her lung capacity - which helped her be more efficient at the trot.

I have also noticed the same thing with Jordy - who is an Arab - so I
believe that cantering helps the horse become more efficient in using
its lung capacity.

So we are probably agreeing.
