Results after the first VC at Swanton

The Swanton Pacific Endurance Ride - August 15, 1998

For the second report - the first VC info will be at
the end of this note. It will be sorted by out times.
A few of the times are missing due to being the last
ones in.  P = Pull.  T1... are  the Ride and Tie teams.
An addition to the earlier R&T description is that 
the pulse and respiration are both 72.  The horse
and rider numbers are completely different in this 
updated list from Barbara so refer to the list below
for the correct info.

The front runners in and out of the first VC were
Wendy Merendini and Larry Bowers by about 10 minutes
over the next rider Jenifer Klein.

There are 9 hills on the trail with 2 really long ones -
2400 feet over 16 miles that just keep going up and up.
Then back down 2400 feet in a short 7 miles. Another very
steep climb near the end - Powerhouse grade rises 900
feet in a very short mile.  This is a trail that just seems
to have another hill always over the hill before you -
with long ridge rides and spectacular views of the 
ocean in places.

The VCs are Bloomquist at 38 miles with a gate into hold
of 1 hour.  The second VC is at the old airstrip(47 miles)
and the only one not accessible to crews.  It's a 15
minute gate into hold where Barbara and Lud provide all
the refreshments for people and horses.  After that -
it is the famous Cascade Ranch VC at 69 miles near the
ocean.  The Cascade Ranch is up for sale now and belongs
to the Steele family who used to own much of the local
area.  Then on to the Sawmill VC(86 miles) where Lud has 
the last operating sawmill in the area.  The final VC is
Swanton at 94  followed by Powerhouse grade and the 
finish line.

The T3 R & T horse is an interesting combination -
1/4 QH, 1/4 Arab, and 1/2 Dutch Warmblood.  Impressive
horse - huge...

Kathy Ruiz almost pulled at Bloomquist due to a serious
hand injury.  She taped up her hand and rode out on time.
We have some tough gals riding this one.  It looked 
pretty bad to me.

Tom Christofk - one of the  R & T team members - was the 
first runner in - and before his horse.  Tom was 7th
or so last week at Tevis.  He was running well and went
on out but his horse was pulled.  Wonder what the 
strategy is on this?  Tough break for Tom and his team
but a good decision on the teams part for the horse.

Additional R & T info from last year was that Rio is
indeed 21 and finished in 21:30 - Becky says they 
would like to take an hour off the time this year.
He seems to enjoy it all and raced into the vet
check looking great.
