RE: Longer Tevis Winning Time

When I told the other people I was crewing with at Tevis that the winner
normally comes in around 9:30pm or so, I was met with sidelong stares
and "ya-sure's".

Could it be that the longer time this year was due to horses not getting
a full hour's rest at Michigan Bluff? I know that the place "to make
some time" is between Michigan Bluff and Foresthill - maybe this year
horses didn't have enough groceries or down time to really kick it into
gear. In studying past years' Tevis times, one horse averaged close to
20mph (swear to God) in this section, the average was 7mph. I can't
wait to study this year's times to see what the average and fastest was
for this section.

How 'bout you riders that did it this year? Would you have been happier
(and your horses more rested) having a longer rest period at Michigan
Bluff? I can't imagine that many horses ate well in fifteen minutes
after those canyons. Another question - how many riders stayed longer
at MB and continued the ride?

Just curious.
Jen

Average for the last years (1965 thru 1997) was 13:19 hours. Potato had
a
riding time of 15:44.
