Animal predators have never worried me - they usually duck out of sight
             when they see us coming

Evidently you have never ridden up in the mountains such as big horns or tetons...a bison will charge you, so will elk, bears, etc. under the right circumstances.

Advice:  stay away from these beasts when possible...be prepared otherwise.  I fully expect my horse to dump me if one charges.....
