Re: saddle/shoe fit analogy

Having seen this analogy for years, I finally have to chime in: I think
comparing saddle fit to shoe fit doesn't quite fit. A more congruent
comparison is saddle and backpack. Judicious padding will definitely
alleviate some problems with either one providing the misfit is not severe.
Injudicious padding creates loads of trouble, which lots of us have learned
the hard way--including allowing the saddle to do a 180 to the south. I
know some saddle makers recommend NO pad, or merely a thin cloth, between
horsehide and saddle if the saddle fits perfectly. That practice might
work, but my thinking/feeling says some sort of padding, however slight,
would improve comfort for the horse (as well as keeping the saddle clean.)
Much depends upon the bearing surface of the saddle...fabric, resilience,
etc. Comments?
