Re: 2 way radios

I do think that Bob is correct that the sort of direction that some crews are
providing to riders certainly falls under the heading of "prompting." Joe
also has a point that the rule as it is now written does not SPECIFICALLY ban
radio communication. This is one more gray area that has been foisted upon us
by the improvements in technology. I agree with Bob that the way that SOME
crews and riders use radios goes beyond the spirit of the sport and violates
the intent of the rule that Bob quoted. Once again, the time is probably upon
us to decide Yes or No to radios. As a ride veterinarian, I find it scary
when someone in camp is trying to interpret what is happening to a horse on
the trail and is directing a rider as to how to pace or cope. The RIDER is
the one who is in the pilot's seat, and the RIDER must make the decisions. If
we want to make this sport some form of orienteering or navigation sport, then
fine, let's call it that. Otherwise, let's develop the skills to be in tune
with our horses and ride our own rides. Meanwhile, if someone wants to carry
a cell phone or radio, sealed, and use it only for emergencies, more power to
them. Ain't technology grand???
