My thirteen year old morgan gelding has a tied in right shoulder. he has had it since birth and has always compensated by rolling his shoulder outward when moving. he has always worn his fron hooves evenly and the only thing we have to be careful of is using a saddle that keeps his shoulder totally free so that he can roll it easily. Over the past couple of months he has been starting to stumble with his rigth front foot and wear the inside of his right hoof more than the outside-he no longer rolls the shoulder but instead moves with his right front leg swinging in closer to the mid line. The shoulder has lost muscle mass as well. All of this has changed his way of going and we are now treating a sprain in the right hind pastern. he also now refuses to pick up a right lead and to bend when going to the right. Any thoughts-i had hoped to continue to use him for CTR's but reduced his training/ride load when he started to be off. My vet thinks he should be retired totally, the tr
ainer (who used to ride him cross-country) suggested finding him a home with a person who wants to do short, slow rides a couple of days a week. That won't work-he needs an experienced rider to keep him calm and slow. I'd hate to give up on him but don't want to hurt him. (Hubby wants me to keep him as a pet but I can't afford him plus another horse for me to ride) Thanx, Judy.
