I have not figured out how the cut of times for the ROC are calculated. To
some extent there seems to be very little logic in the cut off times. At
the OD the cut off times are based on prorating the 24 hour cut off to each
vet check, i.e. must maintain a 4 and 1/6 mph pace. In general if you are
not going at that pace you don't have a chance of finishing anyway so the
cut off times make seem logical.

At the 96 ROC in Utah, the cut off to the first check was too short for a
conservative pace. Then the first part of the trial was lenghtened the day
proir to the ride and the cut offs were not changed. As a result several
horses were late at the second vet check. Susan extended the time at that
check and by 30 minutes and the next check by 15 minutes and most people
made up the time and all was well.

The check at 93 miles was set at a 2:30 AM cutoff and a 20 minute hold.
This ment you had 2 hours and 40 minutes to make the last 7 miles which
equates to a 2.6 mph pace.

I would reccomend that if cut off times are used that they simply be
prorated times based on a 4 1/6 mph pace.

I know we already have enough rules but maybe the rule defining elapsed
time be extended to inclued the calculation of vet check cutoff times.
