I once asked a friend up North if she "plans" on winning or top tenning
rides---and believe me, she has plenty of BCs, wins and top tens,
including a 3rd, a 9th and multiple top twenties at Tevis. She told me
that she had figured out a long time ago that the best way to lose a
race AND ruin your whole day AND possibly ruin your horse was to "plan"
on winning, top tenning or whatever. She said she rides to the best
ability of her horse and herself that day, trusts the horse to give her
his best effort and if his best that day is not top ten, then so be
it---there will always be another race and winning even a championship
ride is NEVER worth pushing your horse beyond what he is able to give.
And so she almost ALWAYS completes, she always has a wonderful time
looking at countryside and riding with friends and lo and behold, very
often she does extremely well. And even though she, too, has handicaps
to overcome to even get to the ride, you'll NEVER hear her griping and
sniping about how unfair it all is. She's too busy having a good time.

Very probably I will never get to the point that I am competing hard for
anything beyond completions, but if I do, this is one home truth I'm
going to keep branded on my forehead. This lady is not only smart, but
wise as well, and in my book that beats belt buckles anyday.

Just my .03, too...
