Yes. The original AERC BC system, which was first used in 1980, had a
formula using one point per minute and one point per pound. By the
end of the year the widespread opinion among riders was that this
formula favored the heavyweights pretty strongly. I did a statistical
analysis of all of the rides that year, and that analysis proved that
heavy riders were winning BC in a significantly higher proportion than
light riders. So the formula was changed to one-half point per pound,
and analysis of subsequent years showed that riders of all weights now
won BC in about the same proportion. So whatever the merits of
changing the emphasis of weight/time vs. vet score, unless new
statistics show an imbalance I do not feel we should change the ratio
between weight and time.
