THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN RIDE was, as promised, a challenging, yet achievable, 5
day & 255 mile high country ride with wonderful scenery. We had great
horses, riders, crews, vets, volunteers, sponsors, and property owners
willing to let us share their trails.
50 riders started one or more days, with nine riders completing all five
days on the same horse. The weather was nice except for an overcast
mid-Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon. The riders got to enjoy lunches,
delicious dinners, and hot showers (if they had enough energy!) each night,
plus a Friday Night Banquet Bash with great Teriyaki food, beer and
peanuts, and a live+accoustic+funny+strolling band playing rowdy
country/folk ditties!
Completion prizes were fun pewter pieces of a train: Day One - Engine, Day
Two - Horse on a flatcar, Day Three - Moose on a flatcar, Day Four - Ram on
a flatcar, Day Five - Dog with a hat on a flatcar; riders completing all
five days on the same horse received a Caboose! The top overall awards
were pewter sculptures of a Pegasus carrying a crystal ball on a marble
base for Best Condition, a rearing horse in front of mountain peaks on a
wood base for Runner-Up Best Condition, a limited edition charging ram for
1st Place, a smaller charging ram for Runner-Up, and a sculpture of "Cowboy
Joe" for the Rothwell Ultimate Sportsmanship Award.
I believe that all of the particpants took home good memories of "endurance
at its peaks" from the inaugural Rocky Mountain Ride!
