Arizona has what is called a "hauling card" that represents ownership.
This card has basic info, and markings (including brands) on it. They
are considered somewhat of a joke, since may horse dealers have stacks
of cards that they can simply match up with whatever horse. As long as
they are "close" no one ever challenges them. They aren't changed,
(with the exception of owner name and addy) throughtout the life of the
horse. Our 22 y.o., 1300 lb QH mare was listed as being 8 months and
750 lbs! To figure out the real age, you have to calculate from the
given birthday, not what it says under age!

It is also not required to send in the cards in the event of death. I
myself have a card for a burro gelding and a bay half arab gelding.
Maybe someday I'll pick up a match huh? <G>
