25 mile rides

Speaking of being a newbie, I think I'd qualify. I've only done 3 25's and
2 50's, but I am going to do Tahoe Rim next weekend.

I started out by volunteering and crewing and then rode my first 25 in
March at Honeylake.

I have a question for all you old-timer's though...what did you think of
the 25's? Basically, I thought they sucked!! My mare, Elly, was a
lunatic. She discovered that she liked competing and it didn't matter what
pace I wanted her to travel at, she was going for it! I'm still not
comfortable trotting down hill, but that didn't bother her!!

The last 25 I did on her was the absolute worst! I then decided that Camp
Far West would be our first 50. However, the night before, I was stressing
out. If the 25's were bad, would 50 just be an additional 25 miles of
hell???

What a pleasant surprise though. I rode with a friend for the first loop
and Elly was perfect. Then my friend got pulled, but once Elly got over
leaving her buddy behind she was great! She didn't seem to care about the
other horses, would pass or stay with them, whatever I wanted (truly a
pleasant change) and she finished strong.

So why is that? Did any of you have similar experiences with the 25s?
