As a fairly new LD rider...I'll say that because I've only completed two
LD rides..gone to ride at 3 others and vetted in with a lamness.

I agree very much with what Sandy said. There definitely is a place for
the LD rides. It is a taste of what endurance is like. It is not
endurance. When my horse developed his lamness I was going to do my
first 50 in Ocala. After multipe evaluations by many vets, we found out
he has arthritis in his front fetlock. He's now on Cosequin and doing
great.

My plans for this year are 2 slow 25s to see how he holds up and if all
is well, my first 50 will be at Long Leaf, MS this year. I am looking
forward to it. I hope my gut can hold up for it. These LD rides offer me
a testing ground in a competetive and fun atmosphere for my horse and
his recovery from lamness. My horse's well being is my highest concern.
The LD rides offer me a vehicle to achieve my goals.

There have been endless debate/discussion about LD rides. Yes, there are
idiots that race their horses into the ground, but that is true in
anything. There are always idiots. The LD rides are a great opportunity
and we need to continue having them available.
